Additional information

Cardinal Wyszyński spent nearly three years imprisoned by Poland's communist government between 1953 and 1956, following his refusal to endorse state interference in Church appointments under the terms of an agreement the regime itself had violated. His beatification, confirmed by Pope Francis and celebrated in Warsaw in September 2021, had been delayed for decades partly due to the lengthy canonical investigations typical of cause proceedings and partly by the political sensitivities surrounding his outspoken anti-communist record.
