Additional information

On April 10, 2010, a Polish Air Force Tu-154 crashed near Smolensk, Russia, killing all 96 aboard — including President Lech Kaczyński, his wife, and a significant portion of Poland's military and civilian leadership traveling to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyń massacre. The political weight of that coincidence — Poles dying near Katyń again, this time on a remembrance mission — made the event immediately contested in Polish public life, and it has remained so ever since.

The tenth-anniversary issue was produced by Mennica Polska under a face value authorized by Narodowy Bank Polski. Given the ongoing political sensitivity surrounding the crash investigation, the coin's release was itself a minor flashpoint.
