Obverse description Central device depicts the Yellow Crane Tower (黄鹤楼), a celebrated historic pavilion of multi-tiered traditional Chinese pagoda architecture, rendered in fine relief against a mirror-like field. Decorative rockwork and stylized foliage flank the tower at the base. The inscription 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper periphery in Chinese characters. The date 1996 appears in the lower field beneath the tower in Arabic numerals.

Reverse description Central composition depicts a rat perched upon a suspended steelyard balance, rendered in fine cameo relief, evoking the traditional association of the rat with resourcefulness in Chinese culture. The denomination 100元 is inscribed in the upper field. To the right, vertical Chinese inscriptions reading 丙子 (the cyclical year designation) and 中国人民银行 (People's Bank of China) are arranged in the right margin. A small seal character 鼠 (rat) appears to the left within an oval cartouche, identifying the zodiac subject.
