China's platinum lunar series occupied an awkward commercial position throughout the 1990s — priced above gold equivalents but lacking the same collector base, platinum lunar issues from this period consistently underperformed at initial sale. Mintages were repeatedly revised downward as the decade progressed. The 1999 Rabbit is among the last of the series before the People's Bank restructured its precious metals program in the early 2000s.
