Tang Xianzu (1550–1616) is often paired with Shakespeare in Chinese cultural diplomacy — both died in 1616, and Beijing leaned hard on that coincidence during the quatercentenary commemorations. This coin was issued as part of that official observance, timed to the 400th anniversary of Tang's death. The playwright's best-known work, The Peony Pavilion, ran for over fifty hours in its complete stage form and was banned by the Wanli Emperor shortly after its premiere for reasons that remain debated by scholars.
