Obverse description Central depiction of the Temple of Heaven (Tiantan) in Beijing, rendered in fine relief with its characteristic triple-eaved circular hall set upon a three-tiered marble terrace with balustrades and a central stairway. The Chinese legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs around the upper field in Chinese characters. The date 1990 appears in Arabic numerals at the base of the design in the lower field.

Reverse description A giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is depicted in high relief, seated atop a rocky outcrop and facing three-quarters to the right, with its forepaws resting on the rock. A bamboo stalk with leaves rises to the left of the animal. The denomination 100元 appears in the lower field in a combination of Arabic numerals and Chinese characters. The upper field bears a Chinese and Latin inscription indicating the platinum content and weight: 含白金1盎司 成色.9995 1oz Pt.
