The Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Area was the Chinese Communist administrative heartland during the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the notes issued by its affiliated trade organs were deliberately kept separate from the Border Area Bank's currency — a practical hedge allowing commercial transactions to be managed outside the main monetary framework. The Trade Company's circulation notes, of which this is among the higher denominations, circulated within a tightly controlled regional economy that was simultaneously blockaded by Nationalist forces and under Japanese military pressure from the east and north.
The Pick numbering spread across S3631–S3639 reflects multiple varieties within the series, distinguished by issuing sub-branch, date, or overprint rather than fundamental design changes.
