This note belongs to a commemorative series issued by the People's Bank of China honoring the Four Beauties of ancient Chinese legend — Wang Zhaojun, Diao Chan, Xi Shi, and Yang Yuhuan. Yang Yuhuan, better known as Yang Guifei, was the consort of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty and one of the most politically consequential figures in 8th-century Chinese court history. Her family's rise to power through imperial favor contributed directly to the conditions that enabled the An Lushan Rebellion of 755 AD, an event that nearly destroyed the Tang dynasty entirely.

Printed on cotton paper rather than polymer, which distinguishes the full series from China's mainstream commemorative output of the same period.
