Established in 1958, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was created to give administrative recognition to the Hui people — Chinese Muslims whose presence in the region traces back to Tang dynasty trade along the Silk Road. The 60th anniversary issue in 2018 falls within a broader PRC commemorative gold program that has, since the 1990s, systematically documented each autonomous region milestone at fixed intervals.
The 8g/.999 format places this squarely among China's smaller-denomination commemorative gold coins, a weight class the People's Bank has favored for regional issues where collector accessibility is a stated concern.
