China's polar research program dates to 1984, when the first Chinese Antarctic expedition established Great Wall Station on King George Island. Four decades of continuous presence later, the program now operates five Antarctic stations and one Arctic station, with the icebreaker Xuelong 2 — a purpose-built research vessel launched in 2019 — completing its first independent polar voyage without foreign escort. This coin marks that sustained commitment at a moment when China has formally classified polar exploration as a strategic national priority under its 2022–2026 Five-Year Plan for polar affairs.
