Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, the Fujian-born rubber and pineapple magnate who built his fortune in Singapore and spent much of it funding Chinese education. His endowment was extraordinary for the period — and the institution he established became the first university in China founded by an overseas Chinese. This centenary issue marks exactly one hundred years from that founding.
