The Bank of West Shantung was one of several regional banks established under the Japanese-backed border region administrations during the occupation period. This note dates to 1944, when the puppet financial apparatus in Shandong province was under sustained pressure from both Nationalist guerrilla activity and Communist base area currencies competing for circulation dominance in the same territory.
The 100 Yuan denomination is significant — by 1944, inflation in Japanese-controlled areas had eroded purchasing power severely enough that high-denomination notes of this type were routinely issued in large quantities and saw rapid turnover. Survival in collectible condition is accordingly uncommon.
