The Bank of Taiwan operated as a quasi-central bank for the Republic of China government on Taiwan from 1949 onward, issuing its own New Taiwan Dollar series independently of the central government's central bank — an arrangement that persisted until the Central Bank of China formally resumed currency issuance responsibilities in 1961. By 1970, Bank of Taiwan notes were technically supplementary issues, but the 100 Yuan denomination remained in active circulation well into the following decade.
The Central Engraving and Printing Plant, established in Taiwan after the KMT retreat from the mainland, handled all domestic security printing for this series.
