The Bank of Shanghai, unlike China's state-owned giants, was reconstituted in 1995 as a joint-stock commercial bank — one of the earliest experiments in shareholding reform within the mainland banking sector. This commemorative issue marks its first decade of operation under that structure, a period during which the bank absorbed several urban credit cooperatives and expanded its shareholder base to include international institutions, notably the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation.
