| Obverse description | Central device features a stylized ho-o (phoenix) displayed with wings spread wide, rendered in high relief with elaborate decorative feathering and scrollwork detailing on the body and tail plumes. The mythical bird faces left and stands upon a single talon, occupying nearly the entire field. The Japanese characters 日本国 (State of Japan) are arranged around the upper periphery — 日 to the left, 本 at the top, and 国 to the right — while 百円 (100 Yen) appears in two characters flanking the lower portion of the design. The entire composition is bordered by a continuous beaded inner rim. |
