The obverse depicts the word `éire` surrounded by the inscription `Saorstát Éireann` and Celtic knotwork. The medal is also dual dated 1922 - 2022 commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the creation of the Irish free State on the 6th of December 1922.
Depicted on the reverse of the medal is Hibernia, the personification of Ireland, seated holding a spear and sunbeams appearing from behind her. The inscription reads `100 years of freedom, The Irish free State`.
