Additional information

North Korea produced a wave of commemorative silver issues through the 1990s almost entirely for the export collector market — hard currency was the objective, not domestic circulation. This piece, issued a full year before the Sydney Games even opened, reflects the DPRK's broader pattern of anticipatory Olympic coinage, a revenue strategy the regime pursued aggressively regardless of any actual athletic participation.
