Issued as part of the wave of commemorative gold miniatures that flooded collector markets in the early 1990s, this piece rode the quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 landing — an anniversary that generated more commemorative coinage globally than perhaps any other single historical event in that decade. Mongolia had no historical connection to the voyage whatsoever; the Bank of Mongolia was simply one of dozens of issuing authorities worldwide licensing the theme through coin producers, most routed through the European trade mint circuit.
