Kazakhstan's hockey program punched well above its weight in the early 2010s, qualifying for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics as the host nation's neighbor and a former Soviet republic with deep roots in the sport. The national team's Sochi appearance — their first Winter Olympic hockey qualification in years — was the direct occasion for this issue.
