Additional information

King Midas was a historical Phrygian ruler of the 8th century BC, distinct from — though entangled with — his mythological counterpart. The Phrygian kingdom collapsed around 695 BC under Cimmerian invasion, after which Midas reportedly took his own life. Kazakhstan's choice of subject is geopolitically pointed: the ancient gold-rich territories of Anatolia and Central Asia share a connected history of early coinage development, with electrum staters from the Lydian kingdom — Phrygia's southern neighbor — representing some of the oldest struck coins known.
