Astana has been renamed three times in 27 years — Akmola until 1998, Astana until 2019, Nur-Sultan during the Nazarbayev-to-Tokayev transition, then Astana again in 2022 after public and parliamentary pressure reversed the 2019 renaming. This coin marks 25 years from the 1998 transfer of the Kazakh capital from Almaty, a relocation driven partly by Nazarbayev's desire for a city he could build from scratch and partly by genuine seismic risk concerns about Almaty's position near active fault lines.
