Tanumafili II held the position of Head of State of Western Samoa from 1963 until his death in 2007, making him one of the longest-serving heads of state in the world and the last surviving holder of a traditional Samoan paramount chieftaincy title at that level. This issue coincided with Samoa's participation in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, for which collector gold issues were licensed to numerous small nations as a straightforward revenue mechanism rather than any particular athletic achievement.
The .900 fineness is slightly below the modern collector standard of .9999, a deliberate cost-management choice common among Pacific island mint programs of the early 1990s.
