Kyrgyzstan declared independence on August 31, 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union — one of the last republics to do so before the USSR was formally dissolved in December of that year. The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic has issued commemorative gold pieces at several independence anniversaries, and this 2021 issue marks the thirtieth. The 7.78 gram weight places it squarely in the quarter-ounce gold format favored by many smaller central banks for anniversary issues intended as bullion-adjacent collectibles rather than genuine circulation pieces.
