Uganda's 2004 wildlife coinage series was produced for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation, a common arrangement for smaller central banks seeking foreign exchange revenue through numismatic exports. The Bank of Uganda contracted production through foreign mints for much of this output.
KM#144 belongs to the Chinese Lunar calendar subset of that program — the rat being the first animal of the twelve-year cycle.
