Additional information

Somalia's independence from the joint British-Italian administered UN Trust Territory came in 1960, but the commemorative gold coinage followed five years later under the Banca Nazionale Somala, which had itself only been established in 1960 to replace the transitional monetary authority. The 1965–1966 dating reflects a two-year striking window rather than separate issues — a single authorized release produced across consecutive years.

At .900 fine and 14 grams, the piece sits just above the weight of a sovereign, a deliberate choice that positioned it competitively within existing gold coin markets of the period.
