Somalia's elephant bullion series occupies an unusual niche: the issuing nation has no functional central bank capable of administering a coin program, meaning these pieces are produced entirely under license by the Bavarian State Mint in Munich. The Somali government lends its nominal authority; Germany does the rest.
The 2014 issue was the third year of the series, which launched in 2012 and distinguished itself by changing the reverse design annually — a deliberate strategy borrowed from the Austrian Philharmonic and Australian programs to stimulate year-on-year collector demand.
