Somalia's elephant bullion series has run continuously since 1999, making it one of the longer-lived wildlife bullion programs from an African issuing authority. Each annual release carries a new elephant reverse design, which drives collector demand well beyond spot — a deliberate strategy that keeps the series commercially viable despite Somalia's near-total absence of a functioning domestic monetary system. The Central Bank issues these coins almost entirely for the international bullion and collector market.
The .9999 fineness specification was adopted to compete directly with the South African Krugerrand's later fine-gold standard and analogous silver programs from the Austrian Mint.
