Kenya's 2019 paper 100 Shillings is something of an anachronism — by the time of issue, the Central Bank had already introduced polymer notes for other denominations, making continued paper production for this value a deliberate policy choice rather than a default. De La Rue has held the Kenyan printing contract through multiple political administrations, surviving the post-election violence of 2007–08 and subsequent currency reforms without losing the account.
Pick 53 succeeds a long line of 100 Shilling issues that date back to Kenya's first independent currency in 1966. The watermark remains the primary security feature — modest by current East African standards.
