| Obverse description | Bare-headed right-facing portrait of Julius Nyerere, first President of Tanzania, engraved in high relief with fine detail to the hair and facial features. Flanking the portrait on either side are stylized decorative floral sprigs. The curved legend TANZANIA 1986 arcs along the upper periphery, while the inscription RAIS WA KWANZA (meaning 'First President' in Swahili) runs along the lower periphery. The deeply mirrored proof fields contrast sharply with the frosted devices, characteristic of Royal Mint craftsmanship. |
