This coin was issued to mark the bicentenary of Mozart's death in December 1791 — the same year the Burgtheater in Vienna had premiered several of his works. The Burgtheater connection is specific: it was the venue for the 1786 premiere of Le nozze di Figaro, staged there at the direct request of Emperor Joseph II, who had famously commissioned the opera despite considerable court opposition to the subversive source material.
Austria issued multiple silver 100-Schilling pieces in 1991 around the Mozart bicentenary, each tied to a different venue or theme from his life.
