Additional information

Karl V never ruled Austria in any straightforward sense — the Habsburg territories were divided in 1521, with his brother Ferdinand I taking the Austrian archduchies while Karl retained Spain, the Low Countries, and the imperial title. Austrian issuers have nonetheless claimed him repeatedly as a Habsburg ancestor worth commemorating. This 1992 coin was part of a long-running silver schilling series that the Austrian Mint used throughout the late 20th century to mark historical figures before euro conversion ended the schilling entirely in 2002.
