The 100 Schilling silver series issued through the 1970s and 1980s was Austria's primary vehicle for commemorative coinage, with each piece tied to a specific city, event, or cultural milestone. The Bregenz issue of 1979 marks the 2000th anniversary of the Roman settlement of Brigantium — a garrison town on the eastern shore of Lake Constance that became the nucleus of the modern Vorarlberg capital.
Brigantium was established around 15 BC during the campaigns of Drusus and Tiberius, and grew into a significant Roman administrative and trade post before its eventual decline in late antiquity.
