Issued to commemorate N.T. Rama Rao, the Telugu film icon who founded the Telugu Desam Party and served as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh three times during the 1980s and early 1990s. His 1983 electoral victory — achieved just nine months after founding TDP — remains one of the more striking upsets in post-independence Indian state politics, unseating a Congress government that had held Andhra Pradesh since the state's formation.
India's commemorative rupee series in .500 silver has drawn collector criticism for its alloy choice, sitting notably below the .925 standard used by many comparable sovereign issues.
