Comments

This note was issued specifically to commemorate the centenary of Gandhi's birth — 2 October 1969 — making it one of the rare instances where the Reserve Bank of India produced a commemorative design within the standard circulating series rather than as a standalone collector issue. It circulated normally alongside regular 100 Rupee notes of the period.

Two signature varieties exist: L. K. Jha served as RBI Governor until 1970, when B. N. Adarkar briefly held the position in an acting capacity. Adarkar-signed examples are considerably scarcer, his tenure having lasted only weeks.
