Additional information

Issued by the Reserve Bank of India as a commemorative circulation-quality coin honoring Muthuvel Karunanidhi, five-term Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for over five decades. Karunanidhi, who died in August 2018 at age 94, was among the longest-serving regional political figures in post-independence Indian history and a prolific screenwriter before entering politics.

The .500 fine silver alloy — well below sterling — is standard for Indian commemorative rupee issues of this denomination, where the Reserve Bank prioritizes controlled production costs over numismatic silver content.
