Reverse description A detailed rendering of the extinct Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) occupies the central field, depicted in profile standing upon a rocky ground with tufts of vegetation, based on the celebrated painting by Flemish artist Roelandt Savery. The bird is shown with its characteristic bulbous hooked beak, plump body, and rudimentary wing and tail feathers, all rendered with fine engraved detail. The surrounding peripheral legend, separated by raised dots, reads · 1988 · THE DODO · RS.100 · 1/10 · OUNCE FINE GOLD, distributed around the entire circumference of the coin.
