Obverse description The obverse is dominated by a rich wildlife vignette: two Ceylon Hill Myna (Gracula ptilogenys) appear in the upper register, surmounted by a golden palm civet (Paradoxurus zeylonensis) perched atop a Ceylon wild mango tree (Mangifera zeylanica), while a Talipot palm (Corypha umbraculifera) occupies the central axis and a Ceylon green pit viper (Trimeresurus trigonocephalus) is rendered in the lower half between the palm and a pair of buds, all set against a scenic landscape underprint. Denomination and issuing authority are inscribed in Sinhala, Tamil, and English, with the date 1979-03-26 and two facsimile signatures of the Finance Minister and the Governor of the Central Bank.

Reverse description The reverse centres on a vignette of two yellow-fronted barbet birds (Megalaima flavifrons) perched on and within the hollow of a timber tree (Horsfieldia iriyaghedi), flanked at lower left by a Ceylon Tree Nymph butterfly (Idea lynceus jasonia) and at lower right by flowering Areca concinna plants, the whole composition set against a scenic landscape underprint. The denomination and bank name are inscribed in Sinhala, Tamil, and English across the upper and lower margins.
