The P#111 series ran for over a decade with remarkably few design changes, which itself reflects a period of administrative continuity at the Central Bank during what was otherwise a deeply unstable time — the mid-1990s to mid-2000s coincided with some of the most intense fighting of the Sri Lankan Civil War, including the LTTE's attack on Colombo's Central Bank building in January 1996, a truck bomb that killed over 90 people and caused massive structural damage to the institution literally responsible for issuing this note.

De La Rue's long-standing relationship with Colombo meant production remained offshore throughout the conflict, insulating the print supply from domestic disruption.
