Transnistria declared independence from Moldova in 1990, backed by the Russian 14th Army, but has never received UN recognition — meaning this coin was issued by a central bank that most of the world does not formally acknowledge. The Suvorov Fortress at Bendery (Tighina) was constructed under Russian imperial command in the late 18th century and played a decisive role in the Russo-Turkish Wars.
