Additional information

Transnistria — the narrow strip of land between the Dniester River and Ukraine — is an unrecognized breakaway state that nonetheless operates its own central bank and has issued collector coinage since the mid-1990s. The Transnistrian Republican Bank has used wildlife-themed silver issues partly as a revenue mechanism, since the coins circulate almost nowhere but attract foreign numismatic buyers. The stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) was a deliberate choice: the species is protected across much of Eastern Europe under the EU Habitats Directive, lending the issue an ecological hook despite Transnistria's complete exclusion from EU frameworks.
