Additional information

The Spaso-Euphrosyne Convent in Polotsk is the oldest surviving monastic complex in Belarus, founded in the twelfth century by Euphrosyne of Polotsk, who renounced her princely rank to establish it. She is venerated as the patron saint of Belarus, and the convent houses the church she personally commissioned — the Church of the Transfiguration, completed around 1161, with interior frescoes that survive in fragmentary but significant condition to this day.
