Reverse description An elaborate allegorical composition commemorating the bicentennial of Nikolai Gogol's birth dominates the reverse field. The ghostly, romantically rendered face of the writer emerges from the upper central field, his flowing hair merging into swirling clouds and mist, evoking his fantastical literary world. The left portion of the field depicts scenes from his works, including a troika-drawn carriage amid a nocturnal Ukrainian landscape with cypress trees and a crescent moon, as well as a group of figures in period costume drawn from his stories. The right portion features a detailed cityscape of Saint Petersburg with recognisable architectural monuments, bridges, and embankments, alluding to his celebrated Petersburg Tales. In the lower field, a seated figure writes by quill, surrounded by further literary characters, with the dates 1809–1852 inscribed in the mid-field, and the facsimile signature Н. Гоголь rendered in script above.
