Lev Berg was a Soviet geographer and biologist best known for coining the term "noosphere" — actually, that was Vernadsky. Berg's contribution was foundational work in limnology and ichthyology, and his landmark 1922 classification of landscape zones remained a standard reference for Soviet physical geography for decades. Transnistria's commemorative program in the early 2000s drew heavily on figures with regional ties; Berg was born in 1876 in Bendery, now Tighina, a city that sits on the contested edge of Transnistrian-controlled territory.
