The Chita Branch of the State Bank operated under the Far Eastern Republic, a nominally independent buffer state established by the Bolsheviks in April 1920 to avoid direct confrontation with Japanese forces still occupying parts of the Russian Far East. The FER was a calculated fiction — Soviet in everything but name — and its currency issues reflect that ambiguity: state bank infrastructure issuing notes in a territory whose political status was deliberately kept ambiguous for foreign consumption.
Chita served as the FER capital until the republic was quietly absorbed into Soviet Russia in November 1922. Notes from this branch are regionally specific issues, not central emissions, and their survival rate reflects the chaos of the period rather than any organized withdrawal.
