Transnistria declared independence from Moldova in 1990, though no UN member state recognizes it. The Tiraspol Christmas Cathedral — formally the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ — was consecrated in 1999, making this coin an almost immediate commemorative issued within two years of the building's completion. The Transnistrian Republican Bank has used its coinage program partly as an instrument of de facto statehood, issuing collector pieces that assert institutional legitimacy the international community declines to grant.
