The 1923 RSFSR 100 Rouble issue came at a moment of genuine monetary chaos — the Soviet state was simultaneously running this pre-reform paper alongside the new chervonets, a gold-backed currency introduced in late 1922. Narkomfin issued these notes knowing they would be short-lived; the 1924 monetary reform swept them out of circulation and replaced the entire ruble denominations with new Soviet state notes at an exchange rate that effectively made holding large quantities of the old paper worthless.
The signature varieties on P#168 are extensive, with at least ten named cashier and controller combinations documented — including the Oniker error variant, which omits the reverse text entirely. That error is the most collectible variant in the series.
