The 2021 series marked the rebranding of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority — known since its 1952 founding as SAMA — to Saudi Central Bank, or "البنك المركزي السعودي" in Arabic. The change, enacted by royal decree in early 2020, was largely administrative, aligning the institution's title with international central banking norms rather than reflecting any structural reform. The P#49 100 Riyals was among the first notes issued under the new institutional name, making it a transitional piece rather than a continuation of the SAMA series.
De La Rue's Debden facility has produced Saudi currency across multiple series going back decades.
