Fujairah's 1970 commemorative issues were part of a broader Gulf sheikdom phenomenon: newly flush with oil revenues and eager for international recognition, the smaller Trucial States briefly became prolific issuers of collector-targeted coins with virtually no circulation intent. The Apollo XIII theme is pointed — that mission's near-catastrophic failure in April 1970 made it immediately newsworthy, and Fujairah moved quickly to capitalize on it.
Fujairah acceded to the United Arab Emirates in 1971, after which its independent coinage authority effectively ceased.
