Abdülmecid I ascended the Ottoman throne in 1839 at seventeen years old, and within months issued the Hatt-ı Şerif of Gülhane — the founding decree of the Tanzimat reform era that restructured taxation, military conscription, and the legal standing of non-Muslim subjects across the empire. Egyptian coinage under his name reflects the peculiar dual sovereignty of the period: Muhammad Ali and his successors held effective control of Egypt while nominal Ottoman suzerainty demanded the sultan's name on the currency.
The .875 gold fineness places this squarely within the pre-1844 Ottoman monetary standard, before Abdülmecid's currency reform standardized imperial coinage.
