Obverse description The obverse is printed in blue and carries the bank's heraldic arms vignette at lower left, accompanied by a thistle plant motif along the left margin. The centre bears the denomination ONE HUNDRED POUNDS STERLING in large intaglio lettering within an elaborate guilloche underprint, with the place of payment EDINBURGH and the date 1st November, 1957 inscribed below. The serial number appears twice in the upper right and lower left, with two manuscript facsimile signatures of the Cashier and General Manager printed at the foot.

Reverse description The reverse is executed in blue tones and presents a large central vignette of the Forth Railway Bridge viewed from the waterline, rendered in fine engraved line work with a naturalistic sky and foreground water. Bare tree branches appear in the upper left corner, framing the composition. The denomination is stated in a decorative cartouche at the top and as a numeral £100 at the lower right.
